The Bitcoin Ekasi project was founded in 2021 and is inspired by Bitcoin Beach, El Salvador. The project utilizes The Surfer Kids as a trusted community platform through which to introduce Bitcoin into the local township economy, creating a small, localized Bitcoin Circular Economy.
The Surfer Kids is a social development & youth empowerment non-profit organization founded in 2010. The project uses surfing to create youth empowerment.
Unravel Surf Travel is a licensed tour operator in Southern Africa, founded in 2010. In 2015, Bitcoin became a way for the company to continue receiving payments when financial sanctions separated the business from its client base.
The annual Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town conference had its inaugural event in January 2024. The 2nd and 3rd editions took place in January 2025 and 2026, with the fourth edition planned for February 2027. It is Southern Africa’s first (and so far only) conference focused on the grassroots adoption of Bitcoin.
